Our two-day conference will reflect on the past decade and look ahead to the next one, continuing to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue between colleagues, old and new, with the aim of considering how women are shaped by, and help to shape, periods of transition.

Confirmed keynote speakers include Professor Jo Labanyi (Director, King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center at NYU, New York University, US) and Professor Anna Klobucka (University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, US). There will be a round table discussion with artists including Ana Luisa Amaral (poet), Isabel Coixet (film-maker) and Soledad Puertolas (writer).

Possible thematic areas include:

· How have women in the Hispanic and Lusophone worlds experienced change, be it in their personal lives or in a broader political context, for instance in the transition from dictatorship to democracy?
· How do they handle transitions from one space to another, for example through migration or exile?
· In artistic contexts, how are transitions, such as literary turning points, negotiated?
· How are transpositions, such as translations from one language to another or adaptations from one media to another (ie film or stage adaptations) dealt with?
· As women academics, how can we contribute to redefine the field for the decade ahead, as traditional subject boundaries become ever more fluid?

We look forward to receiving proposals for papers of 20 minutes duration and also ideas for panels. Please send your 250-word proposals in Spanish, Portuguese or English, including name of speaker, title of paper, and full contact details no later than 1 May 2009. Papers are welcome from both members and non-members and from both male and female academics whose research falls within Spanish, Portuguese and Latin-American studies (including Portuguese-speaking Africa, Macau, Goa and Timor). Please send your proposals to:
